There is a story saying the Lord Hayagriva ( Lord of Knowledge/Learning) restored the Vedas to Brahma from the demons Madhu and Kaitabha who stole the Vedas from Brahma, it is said that Vishnu took the form of Hayagriva (Haya-Horse and Griva – Neck/Face) to kill the demons and recover the precious scripts. ”Upakarma” or ”Beginning” or ”Aarambham” is the auspicious day to start their education.īrahmins belonging to Yajur Veda observe Upakarma in the month of Sravana (Aug-Sep) on the day of Paurnami. In those days it is said that children were sent to study to distant places where Rishis taught Vedas and Upanishads to the Brahmin community before they were sent away. (Brahmin men do the Sandhyavandam thrice a day. The rituals begin after the men perform the early morning Sandhyavandanam called the Paartha Sandhya.
On the first day, men perform the Tarpanam rituals followed by chanting of the sacred Mantras mentioned in the Veda. The Upakarma ceremony lasts for two days. The Gayatri Jayanti observed on Shravan Purnima day is also known as Sanskrit Diwas, because the Vedas are written in the ancient Indian language. And therefore, people pay obeisance to Mother Goddess on the day of Upakarma. Goddess Gayatri is hailed as the Mother of the Vedas. What is the significance of Gayatri Jayanti? Thus, by retrieving them, Lord Hayagriva blessed the universe with holy wisdom. Lord Vishnu assumed the form of a half-horse-half-man Avatar to save the Vedas from the demons who wanted to deprive humanity of the knowledge that the sacred texts contained. Hence Hayagriva Jayanti is celebrated on this day. Legend says that Lord Hayagriva appeared for the first time on Shravan Purnima. Lord Hayagriva is an incarnation (avatar) of Lord Vishnu who retrieved the four sacred Vedas - Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda and Atharva Veda from demons Madhu and Kaitabha, who had stolen them from Lord Brahma, the creator.
